The meeting that changed everything
On 4 February 1946, a small group gathered at Risley to begin the UK’s atomic programme — a moment that would shape nuclear innovation for decades to come.
Designing a national programme
From Risley, teams were tasked with designing and overseeing Britain’s first nuclear production sites — including Windscale, Springfields and Capenhurst.
From temporary huts to permanent ambition
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Risley expanded rapidly, with drawing offices, laboratories and temporary buildings supporting a fast-growing workforce.
From research to reality
By the mid-1950s, engineers based at Risley were central to the design of Calder Hall — the world’s first nuclear power station to supply electricity to a national grid.
Engineering ideas made real
As the site matured through the 1950s and 60s, Risley became a permanent centre for nuclear engineering — where scientific thinking was turned into practical delivery.
From Risley to Birchwood Park
By the 1960s, Risley had established itself as one of the most important centres of nuclear engineering in the UK — a legacy that continues today at Birchwood Park.
